In this article I look at the pros and cons of astrology, including a deep look at how astrology influences relationships between men and women.
My sister and I both grew up in North Vancouver, a very straight suburb of Vancouver populated by mostly middle and higher income families.
But when we spoke recently, she was calling from LA. And what she said to me was, "Everyone here is into astrology!! Its like the first thing they ask you! It's freaky..." She was definitely not impressed by this. My sister is in her 30's at the time of writing this, and I think of her as a very common sense, capable young women.
Using Astro to Avoid Responsibility
First, there's the obvious: people will say, "Wow, today I had a blowout with my good friend on Facebook. It must be because mercury is in retrograde".
Blaming a situation on the planets... is not a habit of very successful people. Blame short-changes our ability to actually determine the real cause - and change it. And people will even blame their personal qualities on astrology. "Well I'm like that because I'm a Capricorn..."
When Elon Musk runs into a communication problem at Tesla, he doesn't look up the position of Neptune.
Elon is unusually successful - and there is a reason for that. Elon thinks differently than most. Elon thinks very clearly, and very practically. He is a master of common sense.
Furthermore, we also have intuition which can guide us. These two, intuition and common sense, are two of our most powerful faculties. But very unsuccessful people don't use them that much. They are much more moved by wishful thinking, paranoia, fear, desire, or superstition. But of course, they aren't conscious of this.
Typing People = Limiting People
Then there is the way you get 'typed' by astrology. I know...it's not about being typed, but still this happens. People ask 'what your sign?' and then, like it or not, their mind 'types' you, and then now see you through a lens of "Oh, they are like John. They are really good at XYZ, but not so good at ABC".
In other words, they are now more in their head around you, not in their heart.
But even worse - once you've "been told your sign"... your own mind will type you. Now you've got an explanation, a justification for all the things you already believe about yourself.
"Stop defining yourself to yourself and others. You won't become less, you will become more."
- Eckhart Tolle
It is actually our ability to stop defining ourselves, to stop putting ourselves in boxes of all kinds, that is liberating.
Waking up, becoming liberated, means removing all the definitions and expectations that we have put on ourselves. We want to see ourselves and others without the veil of thought in the way. And we do that by:
1) ceasing to type ourselves
2) having a quiet mind, and protecting ourself from whatever disturbs our mind
3) doing good and not doing bad, since doing bad disturbs the mind
So I think it's pretty clear that typing ourselves is a bad idea.
On The Positive Side
I personally think that self-study is a really good thing to do. Things like Myers-Briggs, the Enneagram, or any system of self-understanding, does have some value in that it can help us to see ourselves, our personal qualities, our vices and virtues, more clearly. And the purpose, of that, of course, is to change... its not supposed to be just an intellectual exercise. I don't think self-study, alone, is enough however.
Any self-examination is a good thing, and a good idea. However, like many powerful things, self-examination does have to be kept in check, and done right, or we risk making it into an intellectual exercise, typing ourselves and others. ie: our ego will use it to feel certain and comfortable, secure that "now I know who I am".
Which is actually a very serious... obstacle.
You don't want to put yourself in a box like that.
That said, I do think astrology can be helpful at first, because it gets people looking at themselves, maybe even for the first time. And self-awareness is a good thing. But that's just at first. Then it quickly becomes something that complicates our mind and as we've already seen, and veils the truth about ourselves and others - especially veiling our ability to change.
Through astro, we begin to see people as we think they are, through an expectation, "Oh, of course they did that, they are that sign". Can you see how limiting that is? This expectation makes it harder for them to change - its the power of belief. Expectations are fixed, but reality is fluid. You are fluid.
The challenge is that if we have an inferior teacher or teaching (and there are way more of those), we tend to get our spiritual teaching served up with things like astrology or other forms of lower psychism. And it is almost impossible for the student to discern what is truly helpful and what is just hindering.
Nature Becomes God
And here's where it gets a bit deep...
Astrology, thinking that the planets determine who we are and what kind of day we have, leads us to view nature as God. And that is not true, and it effectively pushes God out of the picture.
Which is not a good idea.
So what IS God, anyway, and why does it matter?
God is not some dude in the clouds. God is inner Light. Behind all form there is a unified field, the Etheric Field, and that field is God. It is formless and timeless. It is pure Mind, also called the Mind of Buddha or Christ. This field came before matter, and will be here after matter is gone. And form comes out of it. So God comes first and is totally unaffected by matter.
Matter comes out of God.
Now I know this sounds like splitting hairs, but think about this: If planets make us what we are, then it becomes a small step to saying nature is God, and soon we're talking about the earth as "Gaia", which is all fine and good, except that it's not true. The truth is that form is the feminine expression of God. And the masculine reality of God is Emptiness.
Feminine and masculine. Form and Emptiness.
Both are God.
But God in truth is Emptiness. God is the Etheric Field, also called The Cosmic Logos.
But if we make nature into God - then women are the Goddess, women are creative, women have intuition, women are loving - which is great, except then what are men?
So we say, "Women's intuition...". But in all truth is, men are just as intuitive as women, if they are in their right mind.
The truth is women and men are both loving, and women and men are both creative, and women and men both have intuition - intuition comes from God, from your Higher Self. It comes from Mind. Intuition is how God (Mind) directs and overshadows evolution, which includes all things.
So Astrology leads to a pagan world view, where the earth becomes Gaia, women become the goddess, and men become everything that's bad and wrong.
And if we're honest, we'll admit that this is a common view today.
And this view itself is what's evil. Because it destroys love.
So astrology, numerology, tarot, all forms of typing and divination, cost us more than we know. Delusional belief systems like these are some of the causes of our problems.
What we really want to be studying is the teachings of all the incarnations of the Avatar: Buddha, Jesus, Krishna, Shiva, and those who interpret those teachings most clearly. Because that is the One Being who incarnates in each life as the Divine Blueprint, expressing most perfectly the Mind of God.
Or at least we want to get our spiritual understanding from other incarnated awakened beings. Not from new age teachings... which are always easier to understand - the hard path is the one where you are growing.
The path of liberation is simple, but hard. The ego complicates it because it doesn't really want to wake up. All the masters who have walked on the earth say the same thing, "Meditation is the royal road".
So my suggestion is this: over the next couple weeks, give yourself a chance to see astrology differently. Step back from it a bit, detach a bit from it, and if it crosses your path, see if it reveals itself to you in a new light. You may be surprised to see in how many ways it is disempowering.
And if you want to avoid communication blow-outs and have a great day, I suggest exploring meditation and other forms of mind-body training. A calm, clear mind has many, even profound benefits, I promise.
