"Sugar is a recreational drug. Now and then, I might have a drink, I won't have a glass of alcohol in my hand all day. But that's what we're doing with sugar."
- Dr. Mark Hyman, 9x NY Times Best-Selling Author, and chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine
The purpose of this article is simple: to help you kick sugar now, so you can enjoy the rest of your life without the 'minor' effects of sugar: the fatigue, the mood swings, the insomnia, the brain fog, the yearly colds, etc. Sugar is a stimulant devoid of nutrition, and it is added in some form to most processed foods we eat. This article will illuminate the costs of sugar, the various forms it comes in, and the path off sugar.
Do you crave sugar or refined carbs? You may have Candida overgrowth. Candida is a fungus that is naturally occurring in the body, but when it over-grows, it can create serious health problems, including anxiety, depression, fatigue, brain fog, and muscle aches. But the main symptom of Candida overgrowth (aka CRC, Candida-related complex), is sugar and carb cravings. Candida itself can make you crave sugar, refined flour, and sweet fruits...the things Candida feeds on the most.
But resolving candida is not a mystery. Thousands of people have recovered from it, and you can too.
I have struggled greatly with sugar addiction and candida in this life, and the consequences on my health and mood have been serious. Consequently I read many books on sugar and candida and have become somewhat of an expert on it. The main way to beat candida is through dietary change, but lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements may also be essential. Here are my suggestions:
If you are trying to heal something, I recommend DOING EVERYTHING YOU CAN DO. Also keep in mind the three healing essentials: Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Energetic Medicines, discussed below.

Nutrition 1. See your doctor and get some blood work done. Find out your B12 level, your Iron level, and instead of testing your vitamin D level, just start taking vitamin D (the vitamin D test here in Canada is $60. Vitamin D itself is maybe $12.). If you find that you are B12 or iron deficient, or even on the low end of the scale, consult "Dr. Google", and likely you will want to supplement them. *Note: RDA and OPA are not the same. RDA is the minimum amount to avoid getting a disease of deficiency. OPA, or *optimal* amount, is way, way higher. To create health, you may need closer to the OPA than the RDA.
I see three stages that we go on as we make the journey of nutritional healing: Stage 1 - "The Health Nut".
Stage 2 - "The Health Coach".
Stage 3 - "The Nutritional Doctor-Healer".
Stage 1 - The Health Nut This is the average healthy eater who has some nutritional know-how. They watch their sugar intake, may not eat gluten, and might do almond milk instead of dairy. Basic nutritional know how. Maybe they take a multi-vitamin or some vitamin D. At this level, you might also be balancing your macro-nutrients in your meals (watching your protein, fat, and carb intake.) You might aim to have a salad everyday. At this level, you also tend to think that the diet that works great for you, will also work great for everyone else too - which how we get fanatical vegans, or fanatical meat-eaters - you think everyone should eat as you do. So at this level, we know some things, but we still believe some myths too.
At Stage 1 - you might have the salad pictured above, and say, "I'm having a spinach salad, that's healthy. Spinach has iron and strawberries are rich in anti-oxidants."
I battled candida for a long time. It would go away, then come back. So I eventually got creative and asked myself, "What the frick is going on here?? What can I do to end this?" Here's some of my answers...
1. Make Love, Not War War is never wise. So instead of just attacking the candida with garlic, oregano oil or what not...instead focus on loving your body in all ways. So - do you need Vitamin D? Is your bedroom too dark? Have you been feeling down a lot? Everything that weakens you, makes you more susceptible to candida over-growth. Making war on Candida is very different than aiming to nourish and love your body and create health. Do everything you can to heal yourself, and start with what's obvious or what you're drawn to do. As you support your body, your body will handle the candida. You have an immune system, that's it's job.

For a while I read so much that my body suffered. But what did come out of that is that I expanded my mind in numerous ways, enriched my vocab, and basically did brain-yoga pretty much daily. Brain-yoga is what I call it when a book is hard to understand, but you push through anyway, and it leaves you going, "WOW". Brain yoga, I've learned, is very good for us. So without further ado, here are some of the books that rocked my world:
Today more and more people are going vegan. More and more people are also going paleo.
The question becomes, "Should I go vegan?". I was vegan myself a decade ago and have been studying nutrition ever since, reading widely, experimenting with my own diet, and I have two important messages to share:
1. Instead of going vegan, please consider just eating less meat, and buying organic or pastured meat instead of conventional.
2. Consider living the way the First Nations lived. They took only what they needed, in humility and gratitude, but they did not go against the design of life.
You can make a healthy version of almost anything, from chocolate to potato chips!
Below are some healthy versions of popular snacks and meals. Which are you favourites?
Popcorn w Cheese - Organic popcorn (since most corn is GMO) + olive oil/flax seed oil + sea salt + nutritional yeast (naturally cheesy, and high in B12). Cooked in a hot air popper. Add cayenne, curry powder, dill, garlic, even sprinkle stevia or cinnamon for sweetness!
A while back I read an excellent article that described 4 'brain types' in Alzheimers.
You'll see very clearly in this article that Alzheimers/dementia is mostly driven by diet and lifestyle. If the body isn't healthy, likely the brain won't be either.
One of the biggest and most harmful lies ever pushed on us, probably from Big Sugar, was the lie that fat will make you fat.
See that image of the two brains above? The brain on the right is all dried out. You get that way by avoiding fat. Don't do that to yourself! EAT FAT. The BS we have been told about fat making us fat is simply not true.
CBD is changing lives. I am a health coach and I read almost daily about the incredible benefits it is having for people with health conditions of all kinds. At first, it sounded too good to be true. I literally had a hard time believing all the claims. Because CBD seems to help almost everything. And that's because CBD gets at the main causes of illness: inflammation, and stress.
Now why would I go and say a thing like that? Because I believe it, I've seen it. I've seen what coaching does for people.
It's the power of 'wherever two or more are gathered...'
Coaching makes things clear. It helps people stay on track. It helps people get motivated. And here are two more very good reasons why everyone should have a coach: 1. YOU are the most complex thing in existence. 2. Life is hard...
As we are exploring different ways of improving health, sleep, weight, etc, one thing that many people find helpful is to add a protein shake to their day. This can result in almost effortless weight loss, softer skin, more energy... and it's very digestible nutrition. A "Whole food" shake is one that is made with whole foods, and nothing processed. For ex: blueberries, hemp seeds, walnuts, coconut oil, and coconut milk.
Most of the time we make a shake with a processed protein powder.
"I was trying to lose this stubborn weight for years. I also had sugar cravings that were impossible to stop. It wasn't until I took the right supplements that things changed."
Recently I heard these exact words, said by a naturopath. I've heard different versions of this said several times before. Usually we think that only drugs can create such a dramatic result. But the truth is, the right supplements can be equally as powerful, and have zero side effects.
