Now why would I go and say a thing like that? Because I believe it, I've seen it. I've seen what coaching does for people.
It's the power of 'wherever two or more are gathered...'
Coaching makes things clear. It helps people stay on track. It helps people get motivated. And here are two more very good reasons why everyone should have a coach:
1. YOU are the most complex thing in existence.
2. Life is hard...
And building health is especially hard. It means transitioning to a healthier diet, being more physically active, saying no to energy drains, and managing the most complex thing in existence: YOU, your body, your mind, your emotions, your diet, your career and your relationships. And on top of that, you might even have kids. Or you might have a chronic illness. Or an addiction. Or all three. That's a lot for one person to handle!
And I'm not the only one who thinks this way. The fact is: medicine is going the way of teams, and these teams are composed of an integrative doctor, working alongside a health coach, or even a team of health coaches. And this just makes sense: the doctor can see clients only for the initial or the deeper, more serious stuff, while the health coaches can be seen even every other week, for things like which supplement to take, how to go gluten free, or which yoga class to try. Sometimes it will even be a health coach leading a group program, where everyone is working on the same thing: overcoming an auto-immune condition, or maybe transforming depression or anxiety.
The future is "P4 medicine": preventive, predictive, personalized and participatory. This requires frequent visits to a coach-like person to actually 'build' and maintain a healthy life-style in the present. Because where the old system of medicine waited until you got sick to treat you, the new system focuses on building health in the present.
The new medicine combines:
1. life-style medicine (movement, positive relationships, satisfying work)
2. mind-body medicine (bio/neuro-feedback, meditation...)
3. energetic medicine (homeopathy, flower essences, PEMF...)
4. and nutritional medicine (diet and nutraceuticals)
One team I know of is Dr. Frank Lipmans practice, he is a doctor, trained in functional medicine, and has 7 health coaches on his team. One coach specializes in vegan diets, another in paleo diets, another in nutrition for athletes and so on. So you see the coach that best fits you, and when you need to, you can see Dr. Lipman. But if the health coach does their job right, you will rarely see the doctor!
